Short Introduction

In the work project 2 of the project ‘Sava River Basin: Sustainable Use, Management and Protection - SARIB’ (http://www.sarib.net/) (FP6-2002-INCO-WBC-1, CONTRACT NO. PL 509160), SARIB GIS and SARIB BASE have been developed. The aim of the package was to develop GIS data base and information exchange module. For the information exchange (downloading and data input) a special platform on a web service has been prepared. The platform presents linkage to water quality and water flow models in the SARIB project. In the SARIB GIS elementary spatial and water status data are integrated. Data were collected from various sources and spatially harmonised into one system.

Background

After the split of Yugoslavia in 1991, water management has not been synchronised, neither integratively followed nor observed by riparian countries. The area has been politically divided into four independent states. There has not been any integrated water management activities until 2002, when the Framework agreement on the Sava river basin was signed. Its ratification on December 2004 opened the door for establishment of Sava River Basin Commission and its Secretariat. They started to be more operational not until 2006.

Very important aspect of building the SARIB GIS is integration of data supplied from all SARIB partners. In this respect, partners have developed mutual trust, collaboration spirit and support that will the most probably stay in the future. Data and information obtained during SARIB research activities are integrated into SARIB database. Locations of measurement points are included into theme ‘SARIB MEASUREMENT POINTS’.

The integrative SARIB GIS system with georeferenced data on crucial themes (rivers, catchment dividing lines, monitoring stations...), gives opportunity to rationalise work of experts and researches in all riparian countries and may as well be used by the Sava River Commission (http://www.savacommission.org).
